If you are going to rely on a handgun for self defense, you need to have a thorough understanding of the following:
- The circumstances under which a citizen in Louisiana is allowed to use deadly force.
- How to shoot your handgun accurately when deadly force is warranted.
- How to avoid getting shot.
At Personal Defense Training we place great emphasis teaching you when you can use deadly force, and on how to shoot a handgun effectively when deadly force is justified. But we also devote a lot of attention to teaching you how to avoid being selected as a victim. In many situations, the most important skills are those that involve situational awareness, avoidance, and de-escalation. We believe that the best way to survive a gunfight is to not be there when it takes place.
I have spent over 460 hours training under some of the most knowledgeable and most respected defensive handgun instructors in America. In addition to training with folks like Clint Smith (Thunder Ranch), Massad Ayoob, Tom Givens (Rangemaster), James Yeager (Tactical Response), Jerry Miculek (World Champion handgun shooter), Andy Stanford and John Farnam, I have also spent a lot of time over the years participating in defensive handgun and practical pistol competitions.
I am a graduate of two Law of Self Defense (LOSD) legal training courses – an eight hour Core Class and their 40+ hour Instructor Program. These courses, which cover in detail the legal concepts of innocence, imminence, proportionality, avoidance and reasonableness as they relate to the use of deadly force, included a special module focused on Louisiana’s self-defense statutes.
I don’t mention my training and practice regimen as a way of claiming that I am the ultimate authority on handguns or personal defense. I offer it only to illustrate that I am a serious student of the defensive use of handguns, and to respectfully suggest that you will benefit from the concepts, philosophies and techniques I have learned at some of the most prestigious firearms academies in the world. A common theme among these schools is the importance of developing a defensive mindset, which is an element that I emphasize in my classes.
You will find that my classes are significantly different from many of the other concealed handgun classes. My goal, in addition to providing you with the technical and legal training required for your concealed handgun permit, is to teach you concepts, philosophies and techniques that will, hopefully, enable you to avoid having to ever use your handgun. We will help you develop a mindset that includes awareness, avoidance and de-escalation, coupled with the determination to undertake swift, aggressive, effective action if the threat can’t be avoided.
Our concealed handgun classes will also provide guidance for those who choose to become a more serious student of handgun self defense. It has become something of a cliché, but it’s nevertheless true, that mastering the defensive handgun is a journey, not a destination. Our course is designed to get you started on this path, and give you a “map” to follow that will help keep you and your loved ones safe.
